Resource Information for Beginner Carvers

The best way to get started carving is to have a friend who can spend time with you helping you out.  The second best way is to join a woodcarving club.  There is a club in most any town or city of any size.  The members are always willing  to help beginners and they often have classes for new members.  If no friend or club is available, the third way to get started is to get a book and dig in.  There are many carving books on the market geared toward the beginner.  They are very good but are project oriented.  So, the beginner needs to decide what he wants to do and then find the book on that subject.

American Basswood AKA Linden is an excellent wood for both figure and relief carving.  It is hard to find at a lumber company unless that business carries a line of hardwood for crafters and cabinet makers.  The club can help with this.
